Heavy down pour resulted to flood that destroyed 50 houses
in Tangaza and Goronyo Local Government
Areas of Sokoto State. The 25 of the
houses damaged on Monday were in Keta village of Goronyo Local Government Area
after a down pour. The Chairman of the local government council, Alhaji Faruk
‘Yar-Rimawa, who confirmed the development, said no life was lost in the
flooding.
"The victims are now squatting in a primary school in the
area. They lost most of their property in the disaster.We have assisted them
with millet and rice and a committee will be set up to recommend further
assistance. We will do everything humanly possible to make them comfortable. We
are making arrangements to inform the State Government and NEMA about their
predicament", ‘Yar-Rimawa said.
The flooding that accompanied four days of rain had
destroyed 25 houses at Gidan-Madi, the headquarters of Tangaza Local Government
Area.
Its chairman, Alhaji Sahabi Gidan-Madi, who confirmed this,
however, said that no life was lost as a result of the disaster. Gidan-Madi
said the victims were now squatting with their neighbours and relatives in the
town.
The chairman also said a committee had been set up to
ascertain the extent of the damage caused by the flood and recommend necessary
actions to be taken by the authorities. Gidan-Madi also said that the local
government had assisted the victims with maize, rice and millet.
The Director-General of the Sokoto Emergency Management
Agency, Alhaji Hassan Maccido, confirm the disaster.
