The former Group Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation, NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru is dead.

He reportedly died late on Friday night in Bauchi, and the cause of his death was not revealed.

The GMD of NNPC, Mele Kyari confirmed this on Twitter, saying:

"My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night. He was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him."
