Uchenna Duru, a 42-year-old electrician/fake lawyer has
been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly duping single
mothers with promises of marriage.
The suspected
fraudster who promised to marry a lady in Owerri but never showed up on the
wedding day after preparations had been made, was arrested on October 29 after
one Mrs. Abdulahi Ruth filed a complaint accusing him of defrauding her of an
undisclosed amount of money and her Toyota Camry car marked GU 514 LV.
It was further learnt that Duru who has been on the wanted
list of the police since December 2018, also promised to marry Ruth's friend
Madam Adams Dora who he reportedly met on social media and also collected N1m
from her (Dora) on pretence of buying her a car worth N2.5m ahead of the
wedding in same December 2018. Dora disclosed that the suspect who claimed to
be a divorcee with two children was never seen again after being given the
money.
Upon being arrested, one Faith Eriamiatoe also showed up at
the police station accusing the suspect of promising to marry her and also
defrauding her of the sum of N73,000 on the pretence of supplying goods
auctioned by the Nigeria Custom Service to her.
The suspect however denied defrauding the women and insisted
they will meet in court. He also reportedly claimed to be a graduate of Imo
State University, but added that he never went to Law School.
Duru who also claimed to be into importation of goods, said
he left Dora after discovering that she has four children which will be a
burden to him since he has five children.
“All those things they are saying are lies. I paid the bride
price for Dora. I left her because she has four children and I cannot take care
of them" he said.
Confirming the arrest of the suspect, Police spokesman DSP
Chidi Nwabuzor said he will be charged to court after investigation has been
concluded.
