An apprentice hairdresser, who was short on cash asked billionaire Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg to give her money in a Facebook message, and received a surprising response.

Melbourne teenager Bethany Godfrey was shocked when her Facebook message to the platform's founder seemingly resulted in money being deposited into her bank account.

But her younger sister Corinne told Daily Mail Australia that Bethany just became the family joke.

When the now 21-year-old's father learned of his eldest daughter's desperate plea, he deposited one cent into her account and changed the name on his account to 'Mark Zuck'.

Despite the small figure, Bethany was excited that the Facebook founder had seemingly seen her message and taken the time to respond.

Corinne said her older sister believed the prank to be true for an entire year.

'She was an apprentice hairdresser at the time and wasn’t getting paid very much so she took her chances and really thought it would work,' Corinne told Daily Mail.

'Our dad likes to stir her up because she's definitely the easiest to stir up in the family... she believed it for about a year because we all forgot to tell her.'

Corinne said her sister was often the easiest in the family to pick on because of her unusual problem-solving skills.

'She does stuff like this very often, just a few days ago I made a post about her having an ant infestation in her Subaru.

'Before thinking to go buy some ant-rid, her mind immediately jumped to messaging the local zoo and asking to rent out an ant eater.

'She showed me the message and said “I hope they reply'',' Corinne said.

Corinne shared the message with her friends and family, saying it was 'just another dumb thing' her sister had done.

Bethany responded saying: 'This one was deadly serious not even a joke I really do need help for my ant problem.'

Other people agreed with her logic, saying she'd be 'saving the environment' by using an anteater rather than pesticides.
