The General Officer Commanding, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major General AB Abubakar, has expressed support for the continued existence of the National Youth Service Corps.

He made the call when the Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

Abubakar lauded the unifying role of the Scheme, and charged those against it to research about its benefits since inception.

"We know that the NYSC has remained a veritable tool for national unity and integration since its inception in 1973.

"A lot of persons that would not have ordinarily known even as much as they know about their own states now know other states.

"Imagine someone traveling for the first time from Sokoto to Calabar; how many states he will cross.

He will learn a lot about cultures of others; food of others, their dressing, and so many other things," he said.

The GOC hailed the about 100 Corps members serving in the Division as very disciplined and hard working, adding that two of the ones who passed out recently were part of the engineering team that handled the Division's water project.

He praised the existing cordial relationship between the Division and the NYSC Secretariat, and assured of continued support to the Scheme.

Earlier, the Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, told the GOC that he was in Enugu to monitor the on-going Orientation course at NYSC Permanent Camp, Awgu.

He said his visit to the Division was in recognition of the role of the Army as a critical stakeholder in the NYSC.

Kazaure thanked the GOC for the support the Scheme has been enjoying from the formation, especially during orientation course
