The village chief of Zagabutu in Gwargwada ward of Kuje Area Council, Salihu S. Pada, has fled his community following a chieftaincy tussle that left three people injured.

A resident of  Zagabutu, Yakubu Hussain, said the incident happened last Wednesday when supporters of the two factional  village heads of the community were involved in a free for all.

He said trouble started when the crowned chief of the village, who resides at Kpada village in Niger State, came to the village to pay  condolence over the death of an elder when  supporters of the other faction saw him and accosted him.

“Supporters of the other factional chief, Adamu Sardauna, who is claiming to be the original chief of the village, accosted the crowned chief to remove his robe and those who are loyal to Pada engaged them in a fight using broken bottles and firewood,” he said.

He said three people were stabbed with broken bottles during the fight, adding that the situation became tense until some Mobile policemen were deployed and whisked away the crowned chief in their patrol van.

Reacting, the Agabe of Gwargwada-Ugbada, Alhaji Hussein Agabi Mam, who confirmed the incident, expressed displeasure that the supporters of Sardauna allegedly started the fight.

“You see, the truth of the matter is that when the seven kingmakers from the village presented the two names to me, I asked them to go for voting and in the process of voting, three out of the seven kingmakers walked out of my palace, “ he said.

He added that the four kingmakers that stayed behind voted in favour of Salihu S. Pada.

He said he presented the name to the council chairman and a letter of appointment was issued to him before his palace now coroneted him as the substantive village head of the community in 2014, Daily Trust reports.

When contacted, the Rubochi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP John Kareem, confirmed the incident. He said two persons were injured in the incident.

“We have been able to arrest some people from both sides that were involved in the incident and they were taken to the Gwagwalada police command,” he said.
