The current management of the NYSC has been given a pass
mark for the various initiatives taken in response to some challenges faced by
the Scheme.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung,
made the commendation in a goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the 2017
NYSC Annual Management Conference, which took place in Jos, the Plateau State
capital.
He said the Federal Government and Nigerians had restored
their confidence in the scheme and were happy with its performance.
Dalung, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of
the Ministry, Mr. Adesola Olusola, praised the Management for the industrial
harmony pervading the Scheme, especially as a result improved staff welfare and
motivation.
"I am aware that the mass promotion in 2016 of staff,
who have stagnated for years, the 100% attendance of staff at every Orientation
Course, the clearing of all outstanding staff financial claims, the increasing
mobility of staff due to approval of overdue transfers, the creation of more
staff training opportunities among others, can all be linked to this new level
of motivation and excitement by the staff of NYSC nationwide," he said.
He also noted the vigour and commitment with which has
established zonal skills centres in Gombe and Ekiti States as well as the
ongoing construction of the one for the South-South in Delta State.
Dalung further noted that the decision of Management to
resuscitate the moribund NYSC farms beginning with the ones in Bauchi, Kebbi,
FCT, and Oyo had boosted the increasing relevance of the Scheme.
He gave assurance of the Federal Government's commitment to
the sustenance of the Scheme.
Earlier in her introductory speech, the Director of
Planning, Research and Statistics, Mrs. Victoria Okakwu, said participants at
the AMC gathered to appraise the operations of the NYSC with a view to evolving
new policy direction for improved service delivery.
She said the choice of Jos as venue of the conference was
informed by support and hospitality the Scheme enjoys from the government and
people of the state.
