Woman dies after being set on fire by her husband & in-laws over dowry

A 24-year-old woman has died after being set on fire by her husband and in-laws in a row over their dowry demands, it is alleged.

According to reports in India, the victim was burned alive at her husband's home in the colony of Vikaspuri in northern India.

Police found the woman, named as Parvinder Kaur, lying next to her burned clothing. She was rushed to hospital but died as a result of her injuries

On her deathbed, the Hindustan Times reports, she claimed she was burned by her new husband, Gurcharan Singh, and his parents.

A dowry is the price paid to a man's family for a woman to take his hand in marriage.

Traditionally, the woman's father pays for her to be married in either possessions or money.

The couple had reportedly married for love, rather than an arranged marriage, and such a dowry was not in place.

But after she gave birth to their son four years ago, her husband's parents began demanding money from her.

Her brother explained: 'It was a love marriage. Everything was fine until their son was born four years ago. After that, her husband's family started demanding money from her. We tried to meet their demands.'

As a result of the fighting, they split up and she returned to live with her family.
According to her family, she was sent away from their home last month after a dispute over the dowry.

When she returned to Singh's home to collect her son's clothes, though, she was attacked by his family.

Gurcharan Singh, 27, his brother Prabhjot Singh, 25, and their father Rawel Singh, 62, have all been arrested in connection with her death.
