A 22- year- old man, simply identified as Yakubu on Thursday evening
escaped being lynched by a mob for allegedly snatching a motorcycle on
Agyana road in Abaji Area Council of Abuja.
An eyewitness,
Usman Baba said the suspect and two others, now at large, allegedly laid ambush
for a cyclist on Agyana road.
He said the
cyclist was returning from the village to Abaji town, having dropped off a
passenger there when the suspects flagged him down and snatched the
motorcycle.
"The victim
alerted vigilantes who trailed one of the gang members where he went to sell
the motorcycle and got him arrested," he told Daily Trust.
He
explained that when youths in the area got wind of the arrest of the suspect by
the vigilantes, they went and demanded that he should be handed over to
them to be taught a lesson.
However,
the vigilantes immediately handed over the suspect and the motorcycle to the
police in the area, he said.
The Abaji Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP David Kolo, confirmed
the incident and the arrest of the suspect.
