One of the two cabin crew members that survived the Chapecoense air disaster has revealed to local media how he was able to avoid death. Six survivors have so far been confirmed, with a journalist and three players also believed to have escaped with their lives.

One of those six survivors, aircraft technician Erwin Tumiri, has now explained how he was able to avoid both death and serious injury.

He told Somos Invictos: "I survived because I followed the security protocols. Given the situation, many rose from the seats and started screaming. I put the bags between my legs to form the fetal position recommended in accidents."

Whilst many on the plane understandably panicked moments before the crash, the aircraft technician's calmness is likely to have kept him alive.

Although some survivors were lucky enough to avoid serious injury, others have not been so fortunate.

According to Sky News, goalkeeper Jackson Follman is understood to have undergonesurgery to have his right leg amputated; defender Alan Ruschel is also believed to have had a spinal cord injury operated on.

Fellow teammate Helio Neto is being treated in intensive care following the crash whilst the condition of the other two survivors is not yet known.
