A calf with two heads has died shortly after delivery near town of El Porvenir, Peru. The incident raised alarm among superstitious villagers who believe the animal might have been cursed. Some claimed it was a sign the world was about to end, or an omen for some terrible event, such as an earthquake.

A vet told the local media not to worry. He said: 'What we have here is a calf with two heads, commonly named as bicephalous. Those cases are seen infrequently but we have seen cases like this in the past, not just with domestic animals but also in nature.'

Mr. Palacios said the animal had probably died because the double head was probably not the only deformation.

He said the animal might have died due to organ failure.

Mr Palacios said to the villagers: 'They should not be worried about it because it is not a sign of a bad omen or the foretelling of a tragedy for our region.

'I say to those who are worried to calm down, my friends, those are things which show that nature still has the power to surprise us.'
