Senator Jibrin Barau on Tuesday raised a point of order at the National Assembly on the impending one week industrial strike action, which ASUU has warned to embark on. He therefore led a motion on the urgent matter of national importance regarding the impending ASUU Strike.


Senator Jibrin in his motion points out that ASUU is agitating on the smooth operations of Nigerian Universities and Staff Welfare. He also reminded the Senate of the non-implementation of several agreements between FG and ASUU.

Senator Danjuma Goje supported the motion, speaking on the plight of Nigerian undergraduates when lecturers go on strike. Goje charged the Senate to rise to the occasion and avoid the impeding industrial strike action of ASUU.

Senate Leader Ali Ndume said the Senate as a Stabilizing Arm should immediately step in and intervene by avoiding the ASUU strike action. Ndume asked Senate President Bukola Saraki to personally lead the intervention towards resolving the issues.

Senator Emmanuel Paulker said senate should do all within its power to totally avoid a protracted ASUU strike action. Paulker said one of the demands of ASUU is to remove Universities from TSA Implementation and tasks the FG to find a middle point.

Senate commended ASUU for choosing dialogue over confrontation in their approach and that proper funding for ASUU be put into the 2017 budget.  Senate also resolved to mandate the Senate President to intervene on behalf of the Federal Government to dialogue with ASUU.
