A nurse in a New Zealand hospital has accidentally cut off the finger tips of a new born baby with scissors.

The 23-year-old mother, Marie Campbell was left outraged after her daughter, Lilly had the little finger on her left hand snipped off by a nurse at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand.

The nurse was reportedly cutting a tube attached to Lilly in an attempt to stabilise the three-day-old's blood sugar levels when the accident occurred stuff.co.nz reports.

With her daughter's rotting black finger set to eventually fall off, the 23-year-old first-time mum can do nothing but watch and wait.

Ms Campbell - who wasn't allowed to stay at the hospital's on-site accommodation because she lived too close - hurriedly made her way back to the hospital.

She claims that when she arrived, the tip of her daughter's finger was still lying in the cot.

The finger tip hadn't been put on ice, and so Ms Campbell says it was no surprise when surgery to reattach it failed.

'It didn't work, so now we have to wait for nature to take its course and for it to fall off,' she said.

The hospital has confirmed the incident and says an investigation is underway into the 'very distressing' incident.
