A father has committed suicide with his two sons in his arms. The man who remained unidentified jumped off a highway bridge with his children, age two and four in his arms in New Jersey.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene but his children survived the fall and were rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, CBS reports.

The man’s wife alerted the police and reported a domestic incident, saying that the suspect had kidnapped their two sons and was threatening to harm them.

They eventually tracked his cellphone down to his car which was parked on the way. The man and his children were then discovered at the river under the bridge.

A statement from New Jersey State Police said: 'Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives have determined that the father intentionally jumped with the two children from the I-287 overpass into a wooded area near the Wanaque river.

'He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The children were taken to St Joseph's Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.'
