Having won three gold, eight silver and 12 bronze medals, team Nigeria has been ranked 7th most successful African nation at the Olympics. This was confirmed ahead of the official opening ceremony of this year’s Games in Rio, Brazil, according to a list compiled by BBC Africa.


Kenya are the most successful African country with 25 gold, 32 silver and 29 bronze medals. Other nations in the Top 10 are South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Cameroon.

Team Nigeria’s first ever medal at the Olympics was in Tokyo 1964, when Nojeem Maiyegun won bronze in boxing.
