A 37-year-old bricklayer, Mr. Chukwuma Udenwa, who dumped his father’s corpse in a septic tank at Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State, has been arrested by the Police. The father of three claimed he had to dump his father’s remains in the septic tank because he did not have money to take the corpse to the mortuary.

The man, who hails from Uli in Ihiala, Anambra State, was arrested after his landlord raised alarm on discovering a decomposing corpse in one of the septic tanks in the compound. The suspect reportedly told his neighbours that one of his sisters living in Ibusa, near Asaba brought his 83 years old sick father, Mr. John Udenwa, to his house. He later told some of his neighbours that the father passed on and the corpse had been deposited in Maduemeze Hospital mortuary only for the corpse to be discovered in their septic tank.

Udenwa, who was detained at the Okpanam Police Station before he was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, confessed to the crime on interrogation.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO in the State, SP Celestina Kalu said the suspect would be arraigned in court under section 242 of the criminal code.
