David Cameron has announced that by Wednesday evening, he will resign as Britain’s Prime Minister and hand over to Theresa May. He said this in a statement outside Downing Street.

In a hastily-announced statement outside Number 10, the PM said he was delighted Theresa May would be the next Tory leader. He said he would take part in his final Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday.

"After that I expect to travel to the palace," he said, with his replacement in place by that evening, BBC reports.

David Cameron will attend PMQs on Wednesday, and then visit the Queen before handing over to Theresa May that day
