Two local government’s staff in Delta State have allegedly slumped and died while on duty over tension from ten months unpaid salaries. Reports have it that the victims were staff of Ukwani local government area of the state.

It was gathered that one of the victims, a 52- year-old man came to work last week Thursday but could not go back as he was said to have collapsed in the office at about 12 noon and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but gave up the ghost after two hours.

While in other local governments, reports said that the council staff die almost every day as a result of unpaid salaries, and lack of money for treatment when they fall ill also contribute to their death.

Many of the affected workers have absconded from their duty post, complaining they did not want to collapse in their offices because of hunger.

Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria ( ALGON), Delta State chapter, Mr Malik Ikpokpo, said that councils in the state were being owed salaries because of the downturn in the economy.
