"I met Amaka Igwe in 1989, when as an undergraduate and the National President of the Nigerian Universities Theatre Arts Students Association, (NUTASA) I travelled from my school, University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State to University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State to check their level of preparation for the Nigerian Universities Theatre Arts Festival, which the school was billed to host the following year,(NUTAF '90).
Sulaiman Mojeed-Sanni, a pregnant road sweeper working with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been crushed to death. The deceased identified as Mrs. Kikelomo Bamidele was crushed at Ojota, Lagos, by a petrol tanker with registration number Kano NSR 592 YQ.

Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Basil Ganagana has landed in the hot trap of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The anti-fraud unit slammed him with 10 counts of allegedly defrauding the state government. Mr. Ganagana, who was charged along with his wife, Joan Ganagana and his brother, Thaddeus Ganagana, in case no A/ICPC/1C/2014, is alleged to have used his office to confer corrupt advantage upon his relatives, contrary to and punishable under Section 19 of the ICPC Act 2000.

A man set himself on fire and grabbed hold of a politician during the live recording of a television news debate in a local district, thereby creating chaos in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The politician was also severely burned during the incident. While the assailant died due to the injuries he sustained, the victim has been hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The State of Osun under Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has launched a smart card which carries the data base of all civil servants in the state and will also serve as credit card, debit card and staff identification. President Jonathan has cancelled the FEC meeting of 30th April, following the death of the younger brother of the VP, Capt. Yusuf Sambo. In a statement signed by Sam Nwaobasi, Special Assistant (Media) to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, the cancellation is to enable Council members attend the three day prayer for the late Captain Yusuf Sabo Sambo, the younger brother of the Vice President.
Two Skye Bank staff, including four other persons have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegation of fraudulent transfer of a total of N5.5million from an account in Skye Bank. The suspects are, Ademola Okunlola, Tajudeen Oluwanisola, Kolawole Adams, Temitope Pedro, Bayo Olowoyo, and Otunba Biodun Adebanjo, were picked up in different locations in Lagos by operatives of the anti- graft agency for allegedly effecting the fraudulent transfer of N5, 550,000.00 from the account of one Ajani Kareem Musibau domiciled in Skye Bank Plc. The fraudulent transfers took place on March 3, 2014.

Polygamy law, which allows men to marry as many women as they want, has been signed into law in Kenya by President Uhuru Kenyatta despite opposition from women’s groups. The new development in the country was confirmed through a statement by the presidency, which says "it consolidates various laws relating to marriage".

The protesting Polytechnic lecturers first gathered at the Eagle Square early this morning to protest non implementation of the agreement made by the both Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and the Federal Government and later marched down to the Ministry of Education where Minister of Labour Emeka Wogu addressed the protesters and promised that their grievances would be addressed. The minister then appealed for patience and understanding from the lecturers. The protesters vowed not to leave until they submit their protest letter to the leaders of National Assembly. The Polytechnic lecturers have been on strike since ten months without any sign from Government to meet their demands.

Few movie practitioners have been able to put their thoughts in words. Top producer, Don Pedro Obaseki has written brief elegy about Amaka, while top actress Genevieve Nnaji has pronounced today the darkest day in her career.

An elder from Chibok, where the girls were taken, is said to have stated that most of the girls had been married off to the militants at a bride price of N2000. An abandoned newborn baby, dumped by her mother at birth has lost her life after two hospitals rejected her as a result of lack of hospital bed space. The baby was found inside a carton around Great Aduke School, Victory Estate in Iba area of Lagos state. She was then taken to two hospitals, who rejected her due to a lack of bed space, by the time she was admitted, it was too late.

On Monday April 28, the House of Representatives stated, that a Federal High Court order is delaying the investigation of the alleged N10 billion spent on chartered aircrafts by Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. On March 27, the House ordered the Public Accounts Committee to investigate the Minister’s alleged use of state funds to charter private jets for her personal use. However, due to a court order, the investigation is reportedly yet to be carried out.

Nigerian women are set to mount a massive protest for the release of the 234 girls abducted by Book Haram insurgents on April 15. An all-red -attired women will march on Abuja on Wednesday to press for the release of the girls kidnapped from their hostel at the Government Secondary School, Chibok. A judge in Egypt has sentenced 683 people - including Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie, to death in a mass trial. Mr Badie and the 682 other supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi faced charges relating to an attack on a police station last year. The same court also reversed 492 death sentences out of 529 it passed in March, commuting most of the death sentences to life in prison.

Gbuchenge Augustine, a mobile policeman with Force number 400823 in Lagos, is on the run following a foiled attempt to allegedly use an eight-year old girl for ritual. The girl identified as Amarachi, was found under his bed in his one-room apartment at Olufowobi Street, Ikosi Ketu with her mouth gagged and legs and hands tied. When she was eventually rescued by neighbours, little Amarachi had injuries on her skull and neck. Trouble started for the policeman in the evening of Thursday last week when the parents of the girl, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Abakwan, who had gone out for their businesses returned and did not find their daughter, Amarachi at home.

Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Owerri North, Mr Tawon and others have been accused of gruesome murder of Peter Ogbonna, who was allegedly the bread winner of his family. The family alleged that the DPO led six other policemen, Inspector Dawodu Korie and Supol Henry with the assistance of Mr. Philip Akuta and Damian Akuta amongst others at large, to break into the deceased house and abducted him around 1.00am on Friday, April 11, 2014 and dragged him to the house of one Mr. Philip Akuta, where they gave him the beating of his life that led to his death.
On Saturday night, Shuga TV series actor Emmanuel Ikubese, was night crowned Mr Nigeria 2014 at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Ikubese, got a modelling contract, N1 million prize money and the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the “Mr World” contest in the Netherlands later this year.
