A class reunion is a meeting of individuals who once schooled together in the same graduating class in an institution. It could be a tertiary or a secondary institution.  Some famous primary schools that have been able to produce illustrious individuals in the society also have reunions as well. A reunion often also involves former teachers or professors who may have played active roles in shaping the lives of the individuals that are reuniting. Of recent, given the economic realities of living in Nigeria, college reunions are becoming a rare occurrence as the harsh situation has limited the number of success stories available and many individuals shy away from attending as they do not want to be involved in any success notes comparisons. But among those who have a lot of nostalgia about their institutions, reunions remain a platform for reliving great old memories and reenacting their love for an institution that has really done a lot to shape their lives. For some, reunions have created opportunities for giving back to their institutions in the form of scholarships, donations and special projects for the benefits of their alma maters.
It is on this note that Federal government college Azare in Bauchi State stands out. A great institution and one of the earliest federal government colleges in the country, it was truly an institution with a Federal character as the issue of ‘catchment area’ was not a criterion for admitting of students into the school. Thus, young intelligent pupils from all over the country were pooled together in the school in those days, to be groomed by the best teachers, for the purpose of creating a cerebral pool for the development of Nigeria.
The individuals thus produced, have become some of the most instrumental citizens to the development of the country. It thus becomes understandable that they find it impossible to forget their alma-mater.
The class of 1988, Federal Government College Azare held their reunion at Transcorp Hotels, Calabar on August 23 and 24 2013. It was a great moment of reliving the history of their lives, remembering old dreams and friends and fashioning out ways of supporting their alma mater. The event involved lectures, banquets and fundraising in support of the college as well as reviews of reports on the performance of the school and incentives for maintaining the standards for which the school was known such as awards for outstanding performances to students and teachers of the institution.
